Nursing students take next step in higher education

VALLEJO — Six months of hard work were rewarded recently as 28 women and four men earned their white medical coats as part of an 18-month nursing program at Touro University.

White coat ceremonies were introduced about 20 years ago and symbolize a move to the next level of learning.

The 32 students – many of whom are married, have children and work full time – are working toward an advanced degree in a relatively new field, clinical nurse leader.

The role involves more than one-on-one interaction. Clinical nurse leaders oversee patient care coordination, assess health risks, develop quality improvement strategies, facilitate care team communication and implement evidence-based solutions.
