My research is focused on utilizing the tools of pharmacoeconomics and pharmacoepidemiology to analyze the impact of medication use on society. Specific research interests include health outcomes analysis, policy analysis, secondary database analysis, and quality-of-life issues. I have utilized these tools to assess prescribing patterns, the inappropriate use of medications and its economic impact on Medicaid patients during my tenure on the New Mexico Medicaid Drug Utilization Review Team. I am especially interested in evaluating the clinical, economic and humanistic impact of chronic diseases such as diabetes. In the past, I have been involved with projects to assess the impact of co-morbid depression on the treatment of diabetes. In another project, we analyzed the clinical and economic impact of adding a pharmacist to the care team for patients with diabetes. Currently, I am involved with a research project to assess the impact of inappropriate medication use on health services utilization and healthcare costs in elderly, Medicare beneficiaries. The ultimate goal of these projects is to promote safe and appropriate medication use among patients.
