Dr. Mackie’s current research looks at spatial indicators of environmental health risk and water quality. Most recently she developed methods for the use of remote sensing data to assess the intensity of toxic cyanobacteria blooms in freshwater systems. She has collaborated with the U.S. EPA and the California Department of Public Health’s Environmental Health Investigation Branch. Her past work includes projects on sustainable agriculture and pesticide exposures and projects addressing health risks, exposure monitoring, and health education around bioaccumulative contaminants in fish for anglers and subsistence fishers in California. At the University of California, Berkeley she received her master’s from the School of Public Health and her PhD in Environmental Health. She has worked internationally in China, Bolivia, and Peru.
