Research Interests

Primate Evolution

I am interested in how the Primate Order arose and evolved, principally as seen through the fossil record. My direct field research experience in this area has been with South American primates, mostly in Brazil. My next field project involves paleontological survey in south Asia.

Primate Life History

I am interested in the tradeoffs between neural growth and somatic growth in primates, particularly in terms of how primates have occupied niche spaces in competition with more specialized vertebrates. I believe that the ecological distribution of primates around the world can be explained largely on the basis of a species’ relative commitment to a “cognitive” niche.

History of Science

I am interested in how questions about evolution, particularly primate and human evolution, are framed, executed and interpreted scientifically. I try to account for current trends or consensus opinions in terms of how data have accumulated over time. I advocate for the value of inductive reasoning in scientific inquiry.

Medical Education

I am interested in the pedagogy of basic science medical education. Toward this end my scholarly efforts have focused on the publication of an anatomy and embryology textbook in February of 2007 and a guide to medical school published in 2009.
