Masters of Arts in Education - Special Education  
 

 
 

The Masters of Arts in Education with an emphasis in Special Education can be completed in conjunction with the Education Specialist Level II Credential Program at the College of Education or independent of the credential program for those who already have a credential or are working outside the K-12 educational system. This program is 18-19 units and there are four options for completing the the Masters of Arts in Education with an emphasis in Special Education.

Option 1: Thesis (18 Units)
SEPS 708- Advanced Studies in Mild/Moderate Disabilities (3 units)

SEPS 709 - Advanced Studies in Moderate/Severe Disabilities (3 units)
SEPS 710 - Advanced Intervention in Classroom and School Supports
(3 units)
SEPS 711 - Transition from School to Adult Life (3 units)
EDU 710 - Introduction to Research for Educators (3 units)
EDU 716 - Reading and Writing Educational Research
- Special Topics (3 units)
EDU 795 - Seminar for MA Project/Thesis (3 units)

Option 2: Comprehensive Exam (19 Units)
SEPS 708 - Advanced Studies in Mild/Moderate Disabilities (3 units)
OR
SEPS 709 - Advanced Studies in Moderate/Severe Disabilities (3 units)
SEPS 710 - Advanced Intervention in Classroom and School Supports
(3 units)
SEPS 711 - Transition from School to Adult Life (3 units)
EDU 710 - Introduction to Research for Educators (3 units)
EDU 716 - Reading and Writing Educational Research
- Special Topics (3 units)
One 3 Unit Elective Course, e.g., EDU 715 Teacher Leadership or other pre-approved elective (3 units)

Option 3: National Board Certification (18 units)

Those interested in pursuing National Board Certification develop a portfolio to National Board specifications under the guidance of a faculty member; the portfolio is done as an independent study. Those students interested in pursuing National Board Certification must pay the fee required for such certification and can develop a portfolio to National Board specifications under the guidance of your advisor. Touro University does not award National Board Certification and the Education Program offers support for the development of the portfolio only.


Option 4: Comprehensive Literature Review Paper (18 units)

Students will take their literature review paper from EDU 716 and develop it into a manuscript that for submission to a professional journal. The manuscript will be evaluated by a committee of Touro University faculty and adjunct faculty members before submission.
