EDU 770: Educational Psychology & Classroom Management 3 units

Requirements for a Teaching Credential

Teacher candidates complete additional requirements prior to program admission or prior to supervised teaching (student teaching or intern teaching). The teacher candidate provides all documents necessary to verify completion of requirements. The Touro University College of Education recommends the candidate for a credential. The California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CCTC) issues the preliminary credential, valid for five years.

Prior to admission to Touro’s Single Subject Credential Program:

• Complete a baccalaureate or higher degree from a regionally accredited college or university.
Prior to supervised teaching (student teaching or intern teaching):
• Pass California Basic Educational Skills Test (CBEST).
• Show competency in the principles of the U.S. Constitution. Options include completing a course or passing an exam given by a regionally accredited college or university in the provisions and principles of the U.S. Constitution, with a grade of “C” or higher.
• Verify subject matter knowledge. Options include passing the California Standards Examination for Teachers (CSET) or securing a letter from a university verifying completion of a CCTC-approved subject matter program.
• Verify negative results of tuberculosis (TB) examination
Prior to filing for credential:
• Pass Reading Instruction Competence Assessment (RICA)
• Verify CPR Certification (Child & Adult CPR)

Supervised Teaching Requirements for Multiple Subject Credentials

Supervised teaching for the multiple subject credential will be completed either through student teaching or through the internship option.

Student teaching typically lasts for one semester, divided between two placements, one of which is in grades K-3 and one at the upper elementary or self-contained middle school level. The College of Education uses a gradual release of responsibility model for student teachers, so that over the course of daily teaching under the supervision of an experienced classroom teacher, the student teacher assumes responsibility for planning instruction, teaching, assessing student work, assigning grades, conferencing with parents, and participating as a member of the school community. Student teaching placements are made by the candidate's program chairperson or advisor, although the candidate may request a certain school or disrict. A faculty member from the College of Education is assigned as a University Supervisor.

Intern teachers are employed by a public school as the teacher of record in an assignment authorized by their intern credential. Intern teachers are supervised by a member of the College of Education faculty but work in their own classrooms, augmented by experiences as observer/participants in other classrooms at a different grade level or school setting. Intern teachers are supervised for a minimum of one year, and typically spend two years in the program completing their credential requirements.
