Entry-Level Doctor of Physical Therapy (ELDPT) Admission Requirements
Each student admitted to the Entry-Level Doctor of Physical Therapy Program must meet the following requirements:
- A Bachelor's Degree from a regionally accredited college or university must be completed prior to enrolling, not prior to application.
- Proof of United States citizenship or permanent residency status in the United States.
- A cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 2.7 on a 4.0 scale for all post-secondary education OR a CGPA of at least 2.50 on a 4.0 scale and a GRE combined score of 1000 or more.
- A pre-requisite grade point average (PGPA) of 2.7 on a 4.0 scale for all listed pre-requisites. If any pre-requisite courses are repeated, the PGPA is calculated using the second course attempt grade.
- Graduate Record Examination (GRE) score of no more than 3 years old. TUN GRE code is 4198. If the CGPA is below 2.7 on a 4.0 scale, the GRE score must be a minimum of a combined 1000 with one score at the 50th percentile or higher level. Scores from other professional entrance examinations (MCAT, GMAT, etc) may be requested to be substituted for the GRE.
- A minimum of 10 clock hours observation in physical therapy practice settings under the supervision of a licensed physical therapist or physical therapist assistant.
- A minimum of 10 clock hours in volunteer or paid employment status working with persons with disability. These hours must be distinct and separate from the observation experiences submitted above. Experience as a patient in physical therapy may be included in these hours.
- Two references from non-related persons. One must be from a person familiar with academic work (advisor or faculty) or an employment supervisor. The second reference must be from a licensed healthcare professional.
Prerequisite Courses: All pre-requisite courses must be completed with a minimum grade of “C” (2.0 on a 4.0 scale). Potential students may contact the SOPT for equivalent coursework at a specific undergraduate institution.
- 4 semester units of Biology
- 8 semester units of Anatomy and Physiology
OR
- 4 semester units of Human Anatomy and 4 semester units of Human Physiology
- 8 semester units of Inorganic (General) Chemistry
- 8 semester units of Physics
- 6 semester units of Behavioral Sciences (Psychology, Sociology, Anthropology, etc.)
Admission Procedures
Entry into the program is in the Summer (July) term only.
Applications are accepted beginning September 1, 2009 prior to the term start. The School of Physical Therapy participates in the Physical Therapist Centralized Application Service (PTCAS), All applications must be submitted through PTCAS (www.ptcas.org).Applications are considered on a rolling basis when all required documentation is received and verified by Touro University.
Applications are reviewed for completeness and minimum admission requirements by the Admissions Office. The SOPT Admission Committee will review all completed applications for admissions consideration. Decisions are made by an Admissions Committee based on the published criteria and submitted documentation. Selection of students will include consideration of the following criteria:
- Academic Competence
- Personal/Professional Achievements
- Leadership (extracurricular, employment, community)
- Community Service
- Diversity Experiences
- Communication Skills (written, oral)
- Personal/Lifestyle Management (coping mechanisms, critical thinking, unique life experiences, time management)
Interviews will be offered to qualified applicants selected by the Admissions Committee. Interviews will be conducted by phone. Students may request an on-site interview during a planned campus visit.
Admission Decisions: Following the interview an applicant may be offered admission, placed on a wait-list, placed on a deferred decision list, or denied admission. Students will be notified of the Admission Committee’s decision by US Postal Service mail within two weeks of the interview. The Admissions Committee reserves the right to admit students on an individual basis based on the student’s petition and application, and other required application documentation. Decisions of the Admissions Committee are final.
