Commencement 2019

Excited families gathered to behold the culmination of their loved ones’ years of training and hard work at the 19th commencement of Touro University California (TUC). This year saw the conferral of 490 degrees to 440 students, each thoroughly prepared to join the more than 5,000 TUC Alumni who are exceptional medical care providers, educators, and practitioners of public health.

“Your commencement marks a pivotal and important day for you, Touro, and most of all, the communities that you will go on to serve,” CEO and Senior Provost of Touro Western Division, Shelley Berkley, said to the graduates. “After persevering through long days of studying, lectures, and labs while learning at the side of our expert faculty and community healthcare partners, you can walk today with your head held high across this stage.”

Due to inclement weather, the 2019 Commencement was held off-site at Solano Community College rather than the Grove Amphitheatre on TUC’s Mare Island campus. Three ceremonies were held on May 19 and 20 for the College of Pharmacy, College of Education and Health Sciences, and College of Osteopathic Medicine (COM). Additionally, the COM Master of Science in Medical Health Sciences Class of 2019 celebrated at home on Mare Island in TUC’s Lander Auditorium. Retiring Director of the School of Nursing, Ann Stoltz, was honored with the title of Professor Emeritus. Dr. Stoltz founded TUC’s School of Nursing in 2014, which has grown to offer programs designed for working nurses to achieve their higher education in Doctor of Nursing Practice and Master of Science in Nursing.

The COM Dean’s Recognition Award was presented to Balraj Singh who helped establish a new residency at St. Joseph’s Medical Center, recognizing a need for additional high quality rotations.

Attendees listened to remarks from Rabbi Moshe Krupka, Executive Vice President of the Touro College and University System, and other distinguished guests. Guest speakers at the ceremonies included Virginia Herold, Former Executive Officer California State Board of Pharmacy; and Stephen Shannon, President, American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine. Lieutenant Vanessa Brown, Nurse Corps Division Officer of Navy Medical Officer Programs, commissioned those entering the armed services.

Celebrating the College of Pharmacy’s 10th graduating class, local business owner of Mercury Pharmacy and alumnus of the first graduating class, Richie Dueñas, also offered words of wisdom.

“Your value only grows exponentially when you pull yourself out of your nine to five and make meaningful contributions to your community,” he said. “You’re a celebrity; you just may not know it yet.”

Student speakers included Andrew Robello, College of Pharmacy; Sharon Goldfarb, School of Nursing; Julian Mijares, Graduate School of Education; Mika Fisher, Public Health Program; Jason Nies, Joint MSPAS/MPH Program; and Kristoffer Chin, College of Osteopathic Medicine.
